The Universal Formula for Success
Sunday, November 1st, 2009Knowing what you want, and having enough hunger to get it is the key to a fulfilling life. Knowing what you want in life is actually pretty easy, so easy in fact, that we often over look it. We as humans have a funny tendency to make things more complicated than they need to be. So, I’ll do my best to satisfy our need for complication here.
In my studies of leadership, I’ve learned a pretty powerful formula for getting the things I want in my life. The formula goes like this. Know what you want, find out the price, Pay it in full! It’s that simple. Since the advent of Walmart America has been addicted to deep discount shopping. Nothing wrong with that, but it won’t work on your journey to success. There is no discount, there is no sale, there is no haggling the price. If you want success, you must pay the FULL price, with a willing heart.
This requires a great deal of Hard Work. Let me give you an example I learned just recently. I was watching a video of Will Smith, and he said that if there was something he wanted, and he had to out run you on a treadmill to get it, he would get it every time. Because, he said, he’s not afraid to die to get what he wants, and he will not come off of that treadmill until either you stop, or he dies. The subtle point here is that he’s willing to die for the things that he wants. Although he doesn’t say this, the other side of that coin is that he doesn’t pursue many things unless he wants them that bad.
So, what do you want in your life that badly? How do you find something that you want that badly? This brings us back to the first point; gaining the knowledge of what you want in life is actually pretty easy. It just takes a decision.
So here it is, to find out what you really want in life. First thing, STOP searching for yourself! Ease up on the new fad of inwardness, and finding the power of the universe inside of you. I know going against all of that is very unpopular today, but that thought pattern is a major contributor to the divorce rate in our country.
Second, make a decision on what you want to do. There are an infinite number of things you can do, PICK ONE. How do you know if it’s the right thing for you? There are only two ways to find that out. One way is to talk to someone who is there, get as much info as possible to see if “there” is worth paying the price. In many cases, like out founding fathers, you don’t have anyone to ask, so the only way to truly know if it’s the right thing, and if it’s worth it, is to DO IT.
I understand that we don’t want to waist our effort on something that’s big, and not the “right thing.” But here’s the deal, if we wait around for the right thing, we’ll waist all of our efforts on nothing. The single thing that sets us apart from our greatness once we’ve decided what we want to do is this, “doing the thing we said we were going to do, even when the mood in which we said it is long gone.”
Now, to put a little rigorousness on it, I will say, that you want to spend a little time on this decision to make sure that it fits into the next quote from D.L. Moody. He says, “Our greatest fear should not be of failure; rather it should be of succeeding at something that doesn’t matter.” I believe that God put a dream and a seed of greatness in each and every one of us, and we really don’t need to look that hard to find it. If we do that thing, we won’t have to worry about weather it mattered or not, because it will! It won’t take you years to find it either, it just takes you making a decision to DO something with all of your heart and effort. It won’t be easy in fact I promise you it will be hard. The price is high. Don’t negotiate, Pay it, pay it in full! Ask anyone with a fulfilled life from Victor Frankl to Warren Buffet, achieving fulfillment in your Social, Psychological, Physical, Political, Financial, and Spiritual life IS WORTH every bit of “Hard” you go though.
I don’t like Mountain Due, but I love this video. Here is a guy who knows what he wants, and is willing to do whatever it takes to get it. In this case, I’m not sure the price was worth the reward, but it’s a noble achievement either way.
