In Fairness to Rudy

[polldaddy poll=2210785]Last week, I wrote a bolg and a newsletter about working on your strengths as apposed to your weaknesses.  I used Rudy as an example of how our country is very much enamored with always working on our weaknesses.  The point is, that if you work on your weaknesses, the best you’ll be in that area is mediocre.

Now, there is a LOT to be said about chasing a dream!  Once Rudy had made his one and only famous play that made the Notre Dame Statistic books with a credited SACK, his football career was over.

That experience did have many great points that I failed to mention.  After his football career was over, he took what he learned from that experience and applied it to his strengths.  The new “Rudy Award” encompasses these great points.  The Award is given to people (football players in particular) who personify, “the tree C’s,” Courage, Character, Commitment and Contribution.

To have success in life you must have the Courage to decide what you are going to be great in.  Rudy wanted that to be football, and he was a great inspiration, not a great player.  Now he’s a great teacher.

To have success in life you must have Character to do what you said you were going to do in spite of how you feel! People thought Rudy was crazy when he said he would play for Notre Dame

To have success in life you must have Commitment to make your vision happen regardless of availability of resources.  Rudy didn’t have the talent resources to play for Notre Dame, but he wouldn’t be denied!  He pulled from his other talents to make his vision happen, like building effective relationships with coaches and other players, he got into their hearts.

To have success in life you must make a Contribution of the heart.  It’s not enough to contribute money, for those who give without a willing heart will be better to not give at all.  Rudy would not have been carried off the field if his only contribution was a Sack.

The point is, CHOOSE something to do.  There are thousands of things that you Can do, and can do GREAT.  The problem is not about choosing the “RIGHT” thing to do, it’s just about choosing A thing to do!

When a Lion choose her prey, she doesn’t change her mind half way through because she passed another plumper animal that wasn’t running as fast.  She stays locked on that one until is caught!  Rudy may not have chose the “right” thing to pursue, but he locked on, and never stopped until he got it.  The lessons he learned were invaluable, and now he’s using them in his areas of strength.  Without locking on to SOMETHING until it’s caught, you’ll never go far enough to really learn the lessons that will take you all the way.
